If we keep allowing fossil fuels to bring economic comfort to lazy cultures, there's no incentive to start using their brains. Self sufficient energy is a must if we are to evolve, we can always pay taxes for security reasons so we can make use of others' violence without us being violent, no need of getting artificially stuck in tech just because of the economy.
